Ecology, engineering, economics, and governance are One.
That sentence is not a slogan. It is a working premise. Most failures of policy, project, and enterprise come from treating those domains as if they could be optimised in isolation. They cannot. Energy without ecology is a temporary fiction. Ecology without economics is a speech. Economics without governance is a race to the edge. Governance without measurement is theatre.
Nigel’s work is to reconnect them into frameworks that restore ecological function while increasing economic productivity, and into decisions that institutions can actually hold.
The practice
Across writing, research, and advisory, the same pattern returns: define the system boundary honestly; measure what can be measured; make trade-offs explicit; design incentives that reward durable function rather than announcement. That pattern runs through energy productivity and the Negawatt Economy body of thought; through conservation measurement; through operational programs in hospitality and the built environment; through strategy work with founders and project leaders.
The teachable form of that pattern is the Curriculum for Sustainability, Regeneration & Resilience, also held as ecological intelligence: eight strands from living systems and energy through measurement, economics, governance, collective social learning, regenerative design, and resilience.
The commercial expression is quieter: complex systems, made actionable. Founders, asset owners, institutions, and project teams come when the problem is real and the language around it has become fog.
Some of the work is research: questions held long enough to separate observation from inference. Selected records appear under Research & Writing. Botanical evidence is published on Botanists, an evidence-led botanical research platform examining what is physically present, what the records establish, and where inference begins.
