Focus Question Development
Craft and pressure-test the focus question that will carry a Collective Social Learning process, or any multi-stakeholder decision, before you convene the room.
In Valerie A. Brown’s Collective Social Learning pattern, the focus question is the hinge: it must be open enough for ideals, facts, ideas, and action, yet sharp enough that the room can work. This offering is development and feedback only: drafting, critique, and iteration of the question with the sponsor team, so you do not burn a full workshop on a weak prompt.
What you leave with
- Working focus question (and rejected alternatives)
- Rationale against Brown’s criteria for wicked, multi-knowledge problems
- Who must be in the room for each knowledge culture
- Recommendation: free diagnostic path, CSL workshop, or further definition first
How it works
Typical duration: 60-90 minutes + written note. Format: Remote or in person. Development and feedback..
- Short questionnaire or brief from you
- Draft focus question options from your materials
- Live critique session (remote or in person)
- Written note with recommended question and next step
Take the next step
Tell me about the decision in front of you. A short brief is enough: context, urgency, and what “good” would look like.
