I am Nigel Grier. A systems thinker, writer, and founder working at the intersection of ecological engineering, energy efficiency, and post-carbon economics.
My work is grounded in the principle that lawful design and measured restraint are the basis for enduring systems. I explore how civilisation can conserve structure in the face of entropy, and how we might build economic frameworks that protect the biosphere rather than consume it.
I developed the Negawatt Economy as a new foundation for value. It measures what we conserve, not what we destroy. My writing draws from philosophy, jurisprudence, energy physics, and regenerative finance.
My essays for Modern Diplomacy examine Australia’s strategic, ecological, and economic choices in the context of global transition. I publish regularly across Modern Diplomacy, Substack, and Medium, and my research can be found via Google Scholar.
Through the Grier Group, I lead a portfolio of ventures with others, including Grier & Associates, Ecological Engineering, Negawatt Labs, and Archetype Intelligence. These initiatives develop practical infrastructure, lawful economic tools, and strategic intelligence for systems in transition.
My background spans science, engineering, sustainability, and law. I am currently completing a Juris Doctor with a focus on ecological jurisprudence. This site is a home for my published work, emerging ideas, and deeper questions that shape the direction of my research.
